The Party's Over "Energy, Nature, And Society"

In the chapter "Energy, Nature, And Society" from the Party's over by Richard Heinburg he discusses that we have only discovered temporal energy (ex.coal, oil, natural gas, etc.) a form of energy that will soon run out. Heinburg describes the first and second law of thermodynamics which is that energy cannot be created or destroyed only transformed or transferred to somewhere else. He also stated that when energy is transferred, some of it breaks up. Heinburg also discusses that the earth is a closed system which he states “they exchange energy with their environment, but not matter"(Heinburg 11). The earth relieves energy from the sun and the energy goes back into space without the exchange of matter.
Heinburg also discusses the circle of life through the ecosystem where there is a balance. Each animal makes sure their species doesn't overpopulate as well as make sure they don't go extinct (ex. Hawks eat mice).Heinburg also explains that the human population is likely to overpopulate since there isn't really a limited barrier to keep the human population under control. This will create more competition for resources.
Heinburg also discusses how the discovery of fire helped to advance the human civilization. For example they found ways to cook better and to create new medicines. They also began to discover new tools to hunt more. They were able to create the design to make them more equip for anything to keep their population under control and to create more growth. He also discusses the things we do to collect energy which is"takeover, tool use, specialization, scope enlargement, and drawdown". This is used to build stronger civilizations and gain more power through time.
