The Long emergency and the Maya Collapse

In the chapter "Sleepwalking into the Future" from The Long Emergency by James Howard Kunstler it discusses the realization and effects the collapse will have on the human population. The chapter begins with a vision of the future showing that the loss of fossil fuels will lead to a catalyst of events. For example there will be overpopulation and therefore more competition,no more energy(except if an alternate source is discovered),and the possible extinction of many races. Kunstler also discuses the need to look for a new way of economical income and start shipping things ang growing food more closer to home.
In the chapter "The Maya collapses" from the collapse by Jared diamond he discusses how the once great Maya civilization was destroyed. He disucesses how climatoligists and pagatherers would study the mayan culture and report it to others.Jared discusses the Mayans use of corn was limited due to harsh conditions of the land.It also explains how they started to use the potatos the Europeans bought to the Mayans. Jared also describes the way that the small kingdoms within the Mayans were at war with each other and that this war destroyed most of their agriculture. the Mayans collapsed due to weak leadership and the constant warring between the kingdoms.
These two text are simmilar in that they both describe a collapse. They both show what happens when there is competition within a nation. They also show how the lack of resources and confusing leadership can destroy a society.
